They Said What?

"An extensive internal review revealed probable cause to believe that the local is engaged in ongoing financial malpractice, the misappropriation of union funds, a failure to comply with state and federal law, as well as the CWA constitution, and the suppression of dissent," CWA's national board said in a news release. "The CWA national executive board has determined that it has no choice but to take this action to protect the rights and resources of the members of Local 1034."

In response to the national charge that she spent over $700,000 on political donations without authorization from ANYONE, including over giving over $20,000 to her BOYFRIEND Cory Booker, when Local 1034 doesn't represent anyone in the City of Newark, Carla sez: "The executive board of the local authorizes funds for political donations. The individual dona tions do not go to a vote of the board -- never did," Katz said. "This pre-dates me. It's the process I inherited."

(Wait a minute - Did the last president of 1034 date politicians and give them money/get money from them too? )

About the email lawsuit:

Katz's attorney, Sidney Lehmann, said she also would appeal the ruling. He issued a statement saying: "This entire lawsuit has always been motivated by the Republican Party's and Tom Wilson's desire to misuse the court system to embarrass the governor for political gain. We continue to believe that these emails, sent with the expectation of privacy, should rightfully remain private."

Do you see a pattern here?  The GOP is retaliating.  The national is retaliating.  Everyone is picking on poor Carla. Carla - the members shouldn't have to pay for your "expectation of privacy." You want privacy - RESIGN!

Herman Benson, secretary treasurer of the Association for Union Democracy, a labor advocacy group, said that even if Ms. Katz were to recuse herself from lobbying or negotiating with an administration led by Mr. Corzine, they would face doubts. . . "she'd either have to give back the money or resign the job."

"We have no additional gifts outstanding." Jon Corzine, Star Ledger, August 8, 2005."

"If you were -- I'm hypothesizing; I'm not stating anything -- if you were going to pay a tuition bill or something over a period of time ... you pre-funded it. I could have done that," Corzine told The Star-Ledger, March 4, 2007.

"Anyone who reads the newspapers lately can see that Carla Katz is ethically challenged," said Surinder Chandoke, an engineer for the state's Department of Environmental Protection. New York Times, May 23, 2007.

“It is not easy to disengage from a relationship that is both personal and political,” Jon Corzine to Ethic's panel report April 11, 2007.

"We knew we were under heightened scrutiny" Katz told the ethics panel.  The panel was critical of her actions, saying she had created at least an appearance of a conflict but Ms. Katz did not seem chastened. " New York Times, May 23, 2007.

"Ms. Katz enrolled in Seton Hall Law School in 2004, and one union official said she mentioned that one of the reasons she did so was because she hoped to marry Mr. Corzine and was concerned that if he was elected governor, her representation of state employees would be a conflict of interest. After several months of detailed discussion by their lawyers, the parties agreed on the financial package in November 2004. It remains unclear what, if anything, Ms. Katz provided in exchange. " New York Times, May 23, 2007.

" . . . she is an embarrassment to her membership.  Clearly she crossed a common sense line. Whether Corzine compromised himself by giving her an undisclosed amount of money at the end of their relationship, Katz is compromised by taking it and flaunting it. Not since Jim McGreevey has a supposedly smart person made such foolish public blunders. I don't understand how Katz's union members can remain silent during this scandal. It does not matter what's in the e-mails. The fact that she was still privately communicating with Corzine while contract negotiations were ongoing was unacceptable behavior. As for the governor, rather than vow to never use e-mail, he could just get a good spam blocker . . . I don't buy into the argument that Katz is a private individual. She is the elected leader of a large public employee union. She's public. So is the governor."

Alfred Dolbin, July 27, 2007 The Record.

Jim Marketti, President of CWA Local 1032's March 29, 2007 letter to the Executive Board of Local 1032 after they posted a letter to Marketti on politicsnj.com without having actually sent it to him:

TO:  Susan Wright, Robert Mueller, Mary Hrenda, Sue Lockwood, Doris Ruffin, Alice Saulter, Toshi Abe, Jonathan Berg, Anna Curtis Stephens, Ben Manhas, Fred Mickle, Greg Badini, Kevin Tauro and Linda Kukor, Members of the CWA Local 1034 Executive Board
I read your alleged memo to me on Politics, NJ on March 27, 2007.  You neglected to send it to me.  I doubt that you have a sincere desire to communicate with me.  Apparently, a cheap headline is more important to you.

I don’t know of any attacks which have been made on Local 1034.  For that matter, I am not aware of any personal attacks on President Katz.  No one has accused her of being a financial schemer, a sexual predator or a stalker.  The character of her union leadership has been criticized but that seems fair game by any standards of democracy, tolerance or respect for human dignity.

The CWA has a long tradition of Local Union opposition to state worker contracts.  I was opposed to the 1999 agreement.  I spoke to my members exclusively about my opposition and made my recommendation that they reject the contract and vote to strike.  President Katz pioneered the idea of making her opposition to the 2003 agreement a public matter by taking out newspaper ads which attempted to portray the other CWA Local Union Presidents as idiots.

With regard to the current contract, she has escalated this tactic ten fold.  Katz and Roeder started a public brawl and now they whine and cry when anyone dares challenge their misrepresentation of facts, their failure to show any effective leadership to really improve on the contract, and their attempt to walk their members into a strike without telling them.   You say that “Carla has served as union president with dignity, integrity and excellence.”. I would add that she has done so while attending law school in Newark and having homes in Hoboken and Hunterdon County.  Maybe you should explain to Local 1034 members why you have authorized the use of the memberships’ money to pay an absentee Local President.
